Telluride Review: The Way Back

Peter Weir’s The Way Back enters the canon of survival films as perhaps the most sadistically intent on making you feel as much of its subjects’ physical agony as possible. Despite its impeccable awards pedigree and prestige pic status, it may be too straight-up harrowing to get much traction, either with the Academy voters or at the box office. For those with the fortitude to take the plunge, it offers an intense, morally thorny exploration of the limits of human endurance.

Weir, the great Australian director of Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, and The Truman Show, is notoriously selective with his projects, and makes a film a couple times a decade. This purportedly true story, based on the ghostwritten memoir of Slavomir Rawicz (called The Long Walk, not to be confused with the great early Stephen King novella), obviously means a lot to Weir, and the movie gleams with painstaking effort. According to Rawicz, he and his companions escaped a Siberian gulag in 1940 and crossed the continent due south – on foot, armed with a single knife and one sack’s worth of food – to emerge from the Himalayas into India in 1941.

– Olivia Thirlby is the next to be cast in the latest adaptation of Judge Dredd, which already stars Karl Urban as the futuristic action hero. Thirlby will play Cassandra Anderson, a “telepathic rookie who shadows Dredd,” according to Variety.

– I love that Marvel’s film of The Runaways comics is now apparently titled Small Faces. So instead of being confused with a band biopic that’s already been made, it will be confused with a band biopic I wish would be made. Or it will be confused with an underrated Scottish film from the mid-90s. In any event, it’s an odd change.

– Like Glee? Did you enjoy Minnie Driver‘s singing in The Phantom of the Opera (among other soundtracks)? Then the ’70s, UK-set musical Hunky Dory is possibly for you. And it might even give Julie Taymor some competition since it involves a high school production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest featuring covers of ELO, David Bowie, Nick Drake and the Beach Boys. Both a producer and musical director from Billy Elliot are involved, so we can expect this to turn out well.

Kat Von D Says Jesse James is The One

Some fall in love at first sight, but for Kat Von D it took a bit longer to realize that Jesse James was "the one" for her. She arrived hand-in-hand with the newly single bachelor to her Wonderland gallery opening on Thursday in West Hollywood, CA.

She told People how they evolved into more than just friends, saying, "It was just like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t spent this much time with you the entire time I’ve known you.’ Now I’m just embracing it and enjoying it."

Kat sees a future with Jesse, sharing, "I believe he is [my soul mate] … "Jesse is only my ninth boyfriend. I don’t hang out with anybody unless I am in love." They have found common ground in playing games like Scrabble and relishing in one another’s "nerdy" sides.

Cinematical Movie Club: Before Sunset

If you’ve perused the Before Sunset tag here on Cinematical, you’ve noticed that I write a lot of posts on the sequel to Before Sunrise. Yes, it’s partially fan fervor, but it’s also something more. How can I not write about the film when discussing my favorite romantic scene, or the best sequels of the last decade? The Richard Linklater, Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke collaboration is one of the best examples of so many aspects of cinema. It reveals how a film series and characters should grow and mature for a sequel. It exemplifies the possibilities and reach when romance is done well. It shows the potential of real-time features.

But what it does better than anything else — It lasts. There are many films out there that seem truly stunning at first glance, but after a second, third, or fourth visit, they lose that charm — if they even lure you in for multiple visits at all. Before Sunset, which is nothing more than a pair reuniting after many years to catch up and talk about their romantic paths, offers many levels to parse and enjoy for years to come. I picked this for Movie Club because I know it well. But then I worried. Having written about many aspects before, was there anything new to say?

Yes. Even six years later, Before Sunset continues to be a cinematic treat.
