Céline Dion Talks About Her Las Vegas Return and Her Husband's Cancer: “You Take Chances and You Go For It”

When Céline Dion announced she would be going on hiatus from her Las Vegas residency because her husband’s, René Angélil‘s, health had taken a turn again, fans didn’t know whether or not she would return to the stage.

Thankfully her husband’s throat cancer, which he has been battling for 15 years, seems to have improved so she will resume her residency in August, but Dion’s, 47, decision to move her career to Sin City hasn’t always been met with the utmost enthusiasm.

“A lot of people, especially in the industry, they thought it was a very very high risk,” she explained to NBC’s Nightly NewsJoe Fryer. “I remember hearing that the boat is going to sink again.”

Fortunately, the choice to move her career to Vegas turned out to be one of the best decisions she could have made. Her success exploded, and ticket sales yielded more than $ 500 million over the past 12 years. No sinking of the Titanic here!

“You take chances and you go for it,” she explained, “and you know what I’m more than glad that we did it.”

Not only has Dion furthered her career by performing nightly in Vegas, but she has also inspired others to do the same! Now people such as Mariah Careyand Britney Spears are setting up shop in the Nevada city, performing day in and day out for fans every week. But the “My Heart Will Go On” singer is too humble to take any credit for inspiring others to follow in her footsteps.

“I don’t want to say I’m responsible for any of those wonderful things,” she added. “But, I’m very happy.”

By her side throughout her career has been her former manager and husband, 73, who is also the person who encouraged her to return to the stage at Caesar’s Palace come Aug. 27, she revealed in a statement following the news of her return.

“It was René’s wish that I come back. While my family will always be my priority, my fans are just as important to me. I look forward to performing again for all of you starting Aug. 27, and more importantly having René there with me,” Dion said. “Thank you for giving me this time I needed to spend with my family.”
